To kick off, let’s check out this list:
Mascara: 3-6 months
Moisturizer: 6-12 months
Liquid Foundation: 12 months
Cream Concealers and Blushes: 12-18 months
Eye Shadow: 12-18 months
Lip gloss: 18-24 months
Pressed Powders: 24 months
Eye liner: 24 months
Lipstick: 24 months

Too much information. Were you able to digest it? One of the easiest ways to remember all of these notes is to mark your makeup products one by one. You can write the date of purchase at the back of the product or write the expiration date in permanent ink. Like what I did here below:
I know that it is really hard to let go of the things you have cared about but I recently tossed away few makeup products that have been sitting here like forever in my dressing table: Lipsticks, lip liners, eyebrow pencils, and nail polish bottles. I thought the more I delay the action, the more I am inclined to use them again. Eeek!
The Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion in Original is still in my possession (see photo above) but I stopped using this already after over one year of use — super great eyeshadow primer, btw. My makeup friend in Canada sent this to me for my birthday in 2012. Surprise! Surprise! UDPP should be only used up within 6 months.

I may have kind of disregarded the expiration details for a bit on every makeup I’ve used in the past — I was negligent and most of the time was forgetful — but I would like to follow these things from now on. Carefully.
I was actually unaware about the “M” codes (6M, 12M, 18M, 24M) until my previous trip to Beauty Bar where I asked the lady where I could find the expiration date of the product I bought that day.
The M codes simply mean that from the time you open a product, you have 6 or 12 or 18 months until it goes funky.
UPDATE: The correct term for the graphic symbol is called PAO. It means Period-After-Opening.
What happens if you wear expired makeup? Ask the savvy people. But I read that the preservatives have already died after the expiration date and the product has started to be less effective. The preservatives are responsible to stop products from decaying and spoiling.
To add, I read that high-end products have a shelf-life of 3 to 5 years when left unopened. Well, it all depends, I believe. Just trust your gut and read your makeup details.

Yep, make-up and skin care definitely expires. I am pretty good with respecting the best before dates when it comes to skin care and liquid or cream products, but I have to confess that with make-up I follow the rules less religiously… I have some eyeshadows in my stash that are at least a couple years old, woops.

Oh yeah, this expiration date business. I am the most careful when it comes to mascaras because I accidentally used an expired one in the past and got itchy eyes! I am also pretty diligent about skincare products, but for the rest of the makeup I’m not so rigorous. Thanks for the reminder tho! I should probably go through my stash and clean some stuff out!
